Fingernail Fungus Condition

Unlike toenail fungus, fingernail fungus is not a common condition.  The hands are generally more protected than the feet to fight the fungi bacteria.  But like toenail fungus it is very hard and long to treat, usually requiring the intake of oral medications to attack the fungus from within.

Women are more affected by the kind of fungus, and some think it is related to the extensive use of nail polish.  The reason behind this thinking is that it is assumed that nail polish cuts off the oxygen to the fingernail, and the chemicals that the polish contains change the pH of the skin.

Signs of Fingernail Fungus

The sign are pretty much the same as the signs of toenail fungus: strange coloration, crusty edges, crumbling on the nail, debris under the nail, foul odor, thickening of the nail and separation from the nail bed.  It is good to notice however, that ridges not always indicate that there is an infection spreading, it can be caused by others factors such as genetic predisposition and aging.  However in these cases it is better to consult a professional as soon as possible, because some ridges can mean that there is a fungal infection spreading.

Fingernail Fungus and Nail Salons

Not all nail salons do well for your nail, you have to check very well that everything is well cleaned before starting a treatment in one of these places.  The tools nail specialists use can easily carry the fungus from one person to another very quickly.  Even celebrity Paula Abdul, got one infection from her nail specialist on her thumb, she then fought for stricter regulations on ,manicure treatments.

To avoid fingernail fungus it is also good to wear protective gloves if you work too much with water.  They may cost an extra dollar here, and may be uncomfortable at first, but they are the barrier between expensive treatment and your health. The key with all type of fungus, be it on toenails or fingernails is prevention.  Don’t ever forget that.
